Comparison of seasonal terrestrial water storage variations from GRACE with groundwater-level measurements from the High Plains Aquifer (USA)

چکیده
[1] This study presents the first comparison of seasonal groundwater storage (GWS) variations derived fromGRACE satellite data with groundwater-level measurements in the High Plains Aquifer, USA (450,000 km). Correlation between seasonal GRACE terrestrial water storage (TWS) and the sum of GWS estimated from field measurements (2,700 wells) and soil moisture (SM) simulated by a land surface model is high (R = 0.82). Correlation between GRACE-derived and measured GWS is also significant (R = 0.58). Seasonal GRACE-derived TWS and GWS changes were detectable ( uncertainty) in 7 and 5 out of 9 monitored periods respectively whereas maximum changes (between winter/spring and summer/fall) in TWS and GWS were detectable in all 5 monitored periods. These results show the potential for GRACE to monitor GWS changes in semiarid regions where irrigation pumpage causes large seasonal GWS variations. Citation: Strassberg, G., B. R. Scanlon, and M. Evaluation of groundwater storage monitoring with the GRACE satellite: Case study of the High Plains aquifer, central United States
[1] Water scarcity is a critical issue in semiarid regions; however, regional groundwater monitoring is extremely limited. This study evaluates the ability of the GRACE satellites to monitor groundwater storage in the semiarid High Plains aquifer, United States (450,000 km area), which is subjected to intense irrigation. GRACE-derived terrestrial water storage (TWS) is highly correlated with th...
متن کاملStatistical downscaling of GRACE gravity satellite-derived groundwater level data
With the continued threat from climate change, population growth and followed by increasing water demand, the need for hydrological data with high spatial resolution and proper time coverage to be felt more than ago. Therefore, having data such as terrestrial water storage changes and groundwater level changes with high resolution spatial helps to plan and make decisions for water resource mana...
متن کاملA comparison of terrestrial water storage variations from GRACE with in situ measurements from Illinois
[1] This study presents the first direct comparison of terrestrial water storage estimates from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission to in situ hydrological observations. Monthly anomalies of total water storage derived from GRACE gravity fields are compared with combined soil moisture and groundwater measurements from a network of observing sites in Illinois. T...
متن کاملThe role of groundwater in the Amazon water cycle: 3. Influence on terrestrial water storage computations and comparison with GRACE
[1] We explore the mechanisms whereby groundwater influences terrestrial water storage (TWS) in the Amazon using GRACE observations and two contrasting versions of the LEAF-Hydro-Flood hydrological model: one with and the other without an interactive groundwater. We find that, first, where the water table is shallow as in northwestern Amazonia and floodplains elsewhere, subsurface stores (vados...
متن کاملGRACE Hydrological estimates for small basins: Evaluating processing approaches on the High Plains Aquifer, USA
[1] The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites provide observations of water storage variation at regional scales. However, when focusing on a region of interest, limited spatial resolution and noise contamination can cause estimation bias and spatial leakage, problems that are exacerbated as the region of interest approaches the GRACE resolution limit of a few hundred km.
